Documented outcomes of FIN 5503 experential field-project methodology

Description of impact

Dr. Maskara's signature pedagogical innovation in FIN 5503 ("Real World Finance for Managers") requires graduate students to secure interviews with senior executives at mid-to-large firms and pitch paid consulting engagements. Documented outcomes from the Winter 2019 cohort (n=45) show 44% of students achieving a measurable successful outcome from their field interviews, including 9 new workplace projects, 3 directly attributable promotions, 6 job offers, 4 paid consulting engagements, 2 internships, and 2 mentorship relationships. Over five consecutive semesters, students in the course collectively raised more than $40,000 for charitable organizations (including United Way, UNICEF, USO, Bone Marrow Registry, and ChildNet) and launched 33+ new for-profit ventures generating over $22,000 in cumulative profits. This methodology was recognized internationally by the Financial Management Association with the Innovation in Teaching Award (2019).
