Ashley Wilson

Teaching

Dr. Ashley L. Wilson teaches foundational courses to incoming professional DPT students such as Clinical Skills I and Clinical Skills II. These courses cover various foundational screening and examination tools needed by physical therapists such as assessing joint range of motion, muscle strength, and reflex integrity. She is also lead lab assistant in Systems Management IV, directed by Dr. Brian Russ. This third-year course systematically puts didactic and psychomotor content taught throughout the program together in preparation for students' full-time clinical rotations (nine months).  In addition to her teaching passions, Dr. Wilson mentors DPT students and helps provide effective studying tactics that allow smooth transitions from one semester to the next. 

Scholarly Activities and Research Interests

Dr. Wilson's primary research interests include utilization and validation of performance-based outcome measures in underserved communities. Diversity in physical therapy. Additional research interests include but are not limited to understanding and designing return-to-sport criteria for the chronically injured athlete, mental health awareness amongst the graduate student, as well as supporting the diverse student in post-professional PT program.

Areas of Practice 

Dr. Wilson's primary area of practice is outpatient orthopedics with a focus on sports performance and injury prevention. She has experience in both home health and acute care settings, previously working at Memorial Regional Hospital, Level I Trauma Center. At MRH she spent several years working in specialty areas such as wound care, cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU), multi-trauma orthopedic patients, and neurologically involved patients. Dr. Wilson made a timely transition to academics to pursue her passion of helping DPT students become competent and professional PTs and bridge the gap between textbook knowledge and clinical application.
