Barry Nierenberg, PhD, ABPP, is currently a Professor of Psychology within the Nova Southeastern University College of Psychology where he is part of the core faculty for doctoral psychology level training within the Department of Clinical and School Psychology. He holds additional secondary Academic Appointments within the Department of Psychiatry at the Nova’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) as well as the NSU College of Allopathic Medicine (CAM). At the CAM, Dr. Nierenberg is a member on both the Curriculum and Admissions Committees. He is Board Certified in Rehabilitation Psychology, served as a member on the Executive Board of the American Board of Rehabilitation Psychology and is the Past President of the Academy of Rehabilitation Psychology.
For the past 40+ years, Dr. Nierenberg has held numerous leadership positions as a Psychologist working with other healthcare professionals in hospitals across the country. He served on the Florida Department of Health’s Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Advisory Council between 1989 - 2009 and as Chair of this group from 2001 – 2003. Prior to joining Nova in 2008, Dr. Nierenberg spent the previous 18 years as a Senior Psychologist at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami Miller School of Medicine where he served for many years as Director of Child Adolescent Psychology within the Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Department and as Director of Postdoctoral Training. He went on to an appointment as the Director of Behavioral Science within the Department of Family Medicine where he served from 2003 – 2008.
He is the one of the Past Presidents of the American Psychological Association’s Division of Rehabilitation Psychology. He was the recipient of their prestigious Distinguished Service Award in 2008, their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009 and the Rehabilitation Psychology Mentoring Award in 2015. In 2023 the APA Division of Rehabilitation Psychology established the Barry Nierenberg Lifetime Education Award. This Award carries his name in recognition of the outstanding contributions he has made over the years in teaching the Foundational Principles of Rehabilitation Psychology to psychology and medical trainees as well as professionals.
He has published and presented numerous papers both nationally and internationally. Dr. Nierenberg's research interests include exploring the Intersection of Psychology and Medicine, especially regarding recent findings from both the Positive Psychology literature and the emerging field of Network Medicine. Recent projects include Well Being Therapy via an ACT approach with individuals with Spinal Cord Injury. Additionally, he and his students are working on a novel Network Medicine defined Interprofessional approach to Chronic Pain.
