Research interests

Dr. Abuna’s prolific research spans adhesive dentistry, biomaterials, and endodontics, with over 40 peer-reviewed publications and multiple patents. His work pioneers' resin-dentin bonding strategies, bioactive glass-based materials, and antimicrobial agents targeting oral pathogens. A recurring theme is the enhancement of adhesive systems via biomodification, including electric current-assisted techniques and novel monomers. He’s also contributed to innovations in bioactive restorative materials incorporating nanoparticles such as calcium phosphate, bioglass, and zinc oxide, aiming for remineralization and biocompatibility. Abuna’s collaborations expand into antifungal and antibacterial therapies, including the use of EGCG, essential oils, peptides, and resveratrol. His interdisciplinary studies touch on dental pulp biology, protease activity, and long-term bonding durability under simulated pulpal pressure. Three patents reflect his innovations in biomimetic composites and bioinductive endodontic materials. His research strongly supports translational application in conservative dentistry, offering advanced materials with both therapeutic and structural performance enhancements. A forward-looking yet evidence-rooted voice in dental material science.

Personal profile

Dr. Gabriel Flores Abuna is a Bolivian-born dentist, educator, and researcher whose career spans multiple countries and cultures, bringing a global perspective to dental education and biomaterials research. He earned his DDS in Bolivia at the Higher University of San Andrés, where his foundation in clinical dentistry began. His academic path led him to Brazil, where he completed his MSc and PhD in Dental Materials and Biomaterials at the State University of Campinas. During this time, he contributed significantly to research in adhesion, remineralization, and restorative technologies, and held teaching roles in dental materials and simulation labs.
His scholarly curiosity took him to Japan, where he served as a visiting scholar at Tokyo Medical and Dental University, exploring biofilm development under world-renowned mentors. Dr. Abuna further expanded his postdoctoral research in the United States, completing fellowships in biomaterials, immunology, and microbiology at East Carolina University under NIH-funded programs. He currently serves as Clinical Assistant Professor and Course Director of Operative Dentistry at Nova Southeastern University in Florida.
Fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, English, and French, Dr. Abuna brings a rich cultural competency to mentoring, teaching, and research. He is committed to advancing evidence-based dentistry, fostering inclusivity, and shaping the next generation of dental professionals through PBL and interdisciplinary collaboration.
