Personal profile

Isabel A. Thompson, Ph.D., LMHC, serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Counseling at NSU’s College of Psychology. She graduated from the University of Florida with her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from the University of Florida in 2012. She holds a master’s degree in Counselor Education and a graduate certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Central Florida. She has worked as a professional counselor in a variety of settings, including school, community, and private practice settings. She became a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida in 2012 and a Qualified Supervisor in 2024.

Dr. Thompson teaches and supervises in the clinical mental health counseling program across a variety of formats. She is a dedicated teacher and supervisor and has mentored numerous students during her years serving as a counselor educator at NSU. She focuses on cultivating a strong sense of community in her classrooms, whether online, in-person, or hybrid.

Dr. Thompson’s scholarship and research are focused primarily on two areas: counselor self-care and the integration of contemplative approaches in burnout prevention; and maternal/parental mental health. Her 2024 co-authored book Counseling for Peripartum Depression: A Strengths-Based Approach to Conceptualization and Treatment is a unique and valuable resource for clinicians working with expectant and new parents.

She is passionate about parental mental health, and this is reflected in her service providing psychoeducational presentations for parents with infants in the NICU. She also leads professional presentations to advocate for the need to educate counselors in training about maternal/parental mental health concerns.
