Professor Jane E. Cross joined the faculty of Nova Southeastern University's Shepard Broad College of Law in 2000. She served as Associate Dean for Community Engagement and Director of the Caribbean Law Program and held the Leo Goodwin Senior Professorship of Law. She teaches Legal Research and Writing, Legal Research Methods and Reasoning, the Caribbean Law Seminar, and UCC: Negotiable Instruments Law, as well as courses in electronic commerce and digital trade, federal privacy law, and administrative law. She has also taught online since the early days of distance legal education.

Professor Cross's scholarship focuses on Commonwealth Caribbean constitutional law, legal education and legal writing pedagogy, and access to the legal profession. Her Caribbean work looks at the legacy of colonial constitutionalism, the mandatory death penalty and the movement toward abolition, and freedom of movement and regional integration within CARICOM. She has also written about Caribbean legal history. Her work on legal education examines inclusive teaching, legal writing as a form of resistance, the status of legal writing faculty, and how standardized testing affects who enters the profession. Her current interests include how generative AI is changing legal research and writing instruction, and how to ensure students still master the discipline's foundational skills.

Professor Cross has been active in the American and Caribbean Law Initiative (ACLI) for many years, serving as its president and as coordinator of its Caribbean Law Clinic and summer law conferences. She has close ties to Caribbean legal education, including Norman Manley Law School in Jamaica and Eugene Dupuch Law School in the Bahamas, and she was a Fulbright finalist for Barbados and Jamaica. In the legal academy, she has co-chaired the Writing Connections Planning Committee for the Southeastern Association of Law Schools (SALS), served on the Governing Board of the Legal Writing Institute's Sirico Scholars' Workshop, and served as president of the Southeast/Southwest People of Color Legal Scholarship Conference. She speaks regularly at national and regional conferences on legal writing, online teaching, and Caribbean law.

Her honors include the Stephanie Aelong Faculty Impact Award (2021, 2023, and 2025), recognition as one of the National Black Lawyers Top 100, and the American Society for Public Administration's Outstanding Community Servant in South Florida award. She is faculty advisor to the Black Law Students Association and the Caribbean Law Students Association.

Before entering academia, Professor Cross practiced corporate and banking law in New York and Chicago. She worked at Cole & Deitz and at Phillips, Nizer, Benjamin, Krim & Ballon, and served as counsel to Bank of America and to the New York State Assembly Committee on Banks. She earned her J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, where she was a Note Editor for the Michigan Yearbook of International Legal Studies. She earned her B.A. with honors in international relations from the University of California, Davis, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She is a member of the Florida Bar and is fluent in Spanish.
