About
Julie Torruellas Garcia, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and director of undergraduate research in the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences at Nova Southeastern University. She earned her Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Miami and conducted a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health National Cancer Institute. She teaches a variety of courses including Microbiology/Lab, Introduction to Biology Research I, Practicum in Biology and Cellular and Molecular Biology. Research in the Garcia Lab focuses on discovering and characterizing new phage (viruses that infect bacteria), using AI to predict protein structures of phages and bacterial type III secretion systems, antibiotic discovery, and assessment of course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs).
