Personal profile

About

Mayur S. Parmar is an Associate Professor of Pharmacology in the Department of Foundational Sciences at Nova Southeastern University’s Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine (KPCOM).  He teaches medical students and serves as a Co-course director for several system courses (Gastrointestinal, Rheumatology, Foundation of Research Fundamental of Pharmacology). He is also involved in multiple collaborative medical research projects with medical students.

He has a Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Toxicology, and his doctoral dissertation work focused on understanding the modulation of MAPK kinase signaling in dopaminergic brain regions during normal aging. After completing his Ph.D., Parmar worked as a researcher at the Appel Alzheimer’s Disease Research Institute at Weill Cornell Medical College, where he studied the role of apolipoprotein E in amyloid and tau pathologies. He then went on to work as a postdoctoral associate at the University of Florida, where he focused on understanding the pathological mechanism of Parkinson’s disease and related disorders.

Research interests

A distinguished neuroscientist with over 80 peer-reviewed publications and 2,200 citations (H-index: 27), Dr. Parmar is renowned for his innovative research on neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. His work focuses on repurposing GLP-1 receptor agonists, to treat neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s by leveraging shared pathophysiological mechanisms with type 2 diabetes, and investigating Rab GTPase signaling, notably Rab8a and Rab35, which has shown a modulate tau pathology in preclinical in vitro models. Leading transformative research, he serves as Principal Investigator on an NSU President’s Faculty Research Grant and Co-Investigator on an NIH/National Institute on Aging grant, to advance therapeutic strategies for tauopathies and synucleinopathies.

As a research mentor, Dr. Parmar guides over 15 medical and undergraduate students annually, including those in NSU’s Razor’s Edge Research Program, fostering 10+ student-co-authored publications in peer-reviewed journals. His contributions extend to the scientific community as a grant reviewer for the National Science Foundation, editor for high-impact journals such as Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity and BMC Public Health, and peer reviewer for over 25 journals.

Other work

Recognized with the Golden Apple Award for Best Educator (KPCOM Class of 2027), Dr. Parmar combines research excellence with a commitment to education and community engagement, notably through leadership in the Pinellas County Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Walk.
