Agile Faculty: Practical Strategies for Managing Research, Service, and Teaching

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

While there are myriad ways for faculty to achieve "vital faculty" status, Pope-Ruark offers frameworks for faculty development based on Agile, a fairly new management system borrowed from the software development industry, and Scrum, one of Agile's basic strategies. According to Pope-Ruark, Agile "represents a sea change in management philosophy" that fosters a "more purpose-based, people-driven, learning-focused approach to achieving clearly articulated goals" (p. 3) and encourages us to re-think "'productivity' as the driving force of our work" (p. 24). While the title of the book refers directly to faculty, we believe this book can serve a variety of audiences, including new, mid-career, and latecareer faculty; writing program administrators; department chairs; administrators of student and faculty support programs; and upper-level administrators, including deans and provosts.
