As numerous historians and geographers have pointed out, there are countless parallels between the plantations in North America, ¹ particularly Virginia (including the modern states of Virginia and North Carolina) and New England, between 1585 and 1640, and the plantations in Ulster, and especially Munster, during the same period. ² First of all, many of the adventurers who took part in the first expeditions to Roanoke Island, North Carolina, as well as the later Virginian settlement at Jamestown, has previously served in the Elizabethan wars in Ireland.
