Abstract

This chapter covers the foundational listening strategies for notating recorded music by ear. The first section provides a brief introduction to music listening approaches and the layers of music information to be transcribed. The second section then covers targeted listening to three listening dimensions related to music transcription, namely time, frequency, and panorama. Finally, the third section covers the basics of spotting and identifying sound sources, as well as analyzing the heard music information. The section activities help learners explore several listening approaches pertaining to music transcription. In summary, this chapter helps learners understand and apply those listening techniques necessary to transcribe music.
