    Abstract

This study evaluated minimal change in alertness and its effect on false positive and false negative rates of the Auditory Steady State Response. Subjects were 26 normal-hearing adults. One earphone was not placed in the patient's ear to determine the false positive rates which occurred 13% of the time rather than the expected 5%. The false negative rates increased when the subject watched a muted TV but this did not significantly alter the false positive rate.
