Abstract

Betty's Summer Vacation is a dark comedy play by Christopher Durang that satirizes American culture, particularly the obsession with reality television and violence, through the story of a woman seeking peace who finds herself in a bizarre and violent beach house with a cast of eccentric and dangerous characters, including a serial killer, a flasher, and a frat boy, all while a laugh track plays for an unseen audience. The play escalates from awkward social situations to extreme violence, including castration and beheading, as the characters' dark secrets and violent tendencies are revealed, all under the guise of a vacation.
