Borderline personality disorder in the elderly: A series of nine cases

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Few studies have investigated borderline personality disorder (BPD) among the elderly. This paper suggests that BPD persists into older adulthood. Nine cases of elderly BPD clients (aged 56–78 yrs) seen in outpatient therapy at a university-based clinic are presented. Each one of these clients meets sufficient Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV (DSM-IV) criteria for BPD. Additionally, data collected from a large variety of self-report and interview-based instruments are presented. Implications of these findings for clinical practice are explored.
