Abstract
This paper will present a cost based semantic query transformation approach to processing queries in relational databases. General semantic query transformation approaches used heuristics such as constraint introduction and constraint removal for the conventional query optimizer to evaluate various query plans in order to process a query optimally. For the purpose of semantic query transformation, scrutinizing the cost for a specific query constraint predicate, involving constraint introduction and removal, would avoid both introducing the unnecessary query constraint predicate and dropping useful query constraint predicate for query optimization.
