Abstract
A number of schools of family therapy consider clear generational boundaries to be conducive to healthy family functioning and believe that cross-generational coalitions are linked to symptomatology in one of more family members. This study investigated the relationship between clarity of generational boundaries and family health. A sample of 240 undergraduate students were administered a questionnarie which inquired about the closeness between members of the students' families of origin, the physical/emotional health of individual members, and levels of interpersonal conflict. Results lent statistical support to the theoretical assumptions regarding the importance of generational distinctiveness to the healthy functioning the family.
