Abstract
Cytotoxic lymphocytes are crucial to the survival of our species as well as most other vertebrate species. Normally, these cells function as an internal police force, armed to kill other cells, particularly cells that have undergone malignant changes or cells infected with viruses or other pathogens. This article describes the attributes of these important cells and the mechanisms used to recognize and kill their targets. It also focuses on the effects of environmental, psychological, and social stress on the function of cytotoxic lymphocytes. © 2007
