Effectiveness of Gang Officers in Reducing Gang Violence and Membership: A Comparison of Officer Perceptions with Outcomes

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Gangs are a growing phenomenon that continue to destroy communities across the nation. This study surveyed 178 gang investigators to determine how they perceive their effectiveness in reducing violent crime and gang membership in their jurisdiction. Responses were compared to: (1) the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Statistics for violent crime in the State of Florida to ascertain impact on violent crime reduction, and (2) the Florida Attorney General's Office Florida Gang Reduction 2012 Annual Report to compare their perceptions with actual data concerning gang membership. Results showed the gang officers' perceptions were mixed about their impact on violent crime reduction, and their perceived efficacy at reducing gang membership. The findings contribute to a greater understanding of how gang officers view their abilities to diminish violent crime and gang membership. Suggestions for directions that future research in this area might take are offered.
