Title: Experiential & Reflective Activities in the Classroom and Supervision: Self-of-the-Therapist Growth
Presenters: Dr. Lori Pantaleao, Dr. Natalie Rothman, and Dr. Rochelle Clarke
Affiliation: Nova Southeastern University
Short Description (max 50 words): This lecture will provide a detailed account of how three systemically trained marriage and family therapy professors utilize experiential learning and personal reflection activities in a Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) accredited doctoral and master’s degree program.
Long Description (max 350 words): Learning styles differ from person to person and should be considered at all levels of academia. Three assistant professors in a COAMFTE-accredited program utilize experiential learning and personal reflection mechanisms to engage their students in classroom instruction, supervision, and Self-of-the-Therapist growth and development. An overview of learning styles, experiential learning, and the purpose of reflection activities will be discussed. Each presenter will discuss their unique systemically oriented style of teaching and supervision. Presenter one will share how she utilizes reflection activities in the classroom and supervision environment to enhance the learning experience of students. A demonstration will be provided on how these reflection activities are developed. Presenter two will discuss their work in Equine Assisted Relational Learning (EARL) and how students engage in Self-of-the-Therapist reflection through an experiential classroom atmosphere that takes place at a local barn. An example of how an EARL activity is facilitated and processed will be provided. Presenter three will discuss how they employ experiential learning activities in a classroom and supervision setting to enrich the learning environment. An illustration of how these types of activities are designed and customized based on the setting in which the activity will be offered.

Title: Self Care Series: Groups designed to provide MFT students with prevention resources for academic burnout
Presenters: Dr. Natalie Rothman, Dr. Lori Pantaleao, and Dr. Rochelle Clarke
Affiliation: Nova Southeastern University
Short Description (max 50 words): This workshop will provide a detailed narrative of a monthly self-care series implemented for doctoral and master's students in a Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) accredited doctoral and master’s degree program. The presenters will lead the attendees through an activity utilized in the actual series.
Long Description (max 350 words): The Self-Care Series was designed by three systemically trained marriage and family therapy professors during a time when personal, political, and societal stressors were indicated by students to be raised. The program was created to enhance the academic journey of doctoral and master's level students by providing them with additional resources for stress relief and networking opportunities with their colleagues in a fun and interactive manner. The presenters will engage the audience in a conversation defining self-care and what that looks like from a student-centered perspective. The presenters will also provide insight on how the Self-Care Series was developed, implemented, and marketed to the student body. Workshop attendees will participate in a self-care focused activity facilitated in a similar manner to that being implemented. A discussion processing the experience will conclude the workshop.
Learning Objective: (Complete this sentence: "After this workshop, the learner will be able to do something, or state something, or list something or differentiate something...” Do not use the word understand!)
After this workshop, the learner will be able to reflect on their experience, discuss how they connected with the activity, and identify if there is a need for such a program at their academic institution.
