    Abstract

An ongoing discussion among post-secondary educators deals with the failure of online learning to live up to its promise. Within the pages of this journal, we have extolled the advantages of online learning and training for literate adults. U. S. News and World Report has a banner across the top of its table of contents page: “Rated the nation’s most credible print news source” (by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press). In the March 21, 2005 issue, near the bottom of the page, find “No time for school? Get a degree online.” Therein is the promise that is doomed to failure.
