Generative AI and Qualitative Research: Practical Uses and Ethical Responsibilities

The use of generative AI tools to support the research process—from research conception and design to literature reviews, data collection, analysis, and research reporting—is taking hold among qualitative researchers. These researchers increasingly rely on generative AI tools to streamline workflows, enhance efficiency, and generate insights, as evidenced by the growing demand for specialized genAI research tools, dedicated conference sessions, and professional development opportunities on this topic. Given this interest and accelerated adoption, it is important to examine not only the practical applications of these tools but also the ethical and responsible use of generative AI in qualitative research. This chapter provides an overview of how generative AI tools are being used throughout the qualitative research process, discussespotential ethical issues that arise, and offers guiding principles for responsible use. By providing practical insights and considerations for responsible use of generative AI, this chapter aims to provide researchers with a framework for integrating generative AI into their work while maintaining academic rigor and ethical responsibility. My observations: Marti has embraced AI to a great extent. She and I have discussed its uses, especially in the arena of reviewing work by others. We both serve on the editorial board of The Qualitative Report (TQR). We also have given presentations together. We did a podcast together in which she interviewed me on the general topic of qualitative research. I think this was before AI had become so popular. Through a pragmatic yet critical lens, Marti outlines how AI tools are being used to enhance efficiency, support data analysis, and expand access to resources. At the same time, she raises pressing ethical questions regarding authorship, transparency, representation, and bias. Offering a balanced framework for responsible AI integration, she invites researchers to engage with these tools thoughtfully, ensuring that technological innovation remains grounded in the values of qualitative integrity.
