Abstract

This case study provides information about Patients-Are-Foremost Medical Center (PFMC) and its recent efforts to adapt to time-out intervention procedures, focusing on teamwork, communication, and leadership frameworks within medical/operating teams. The case centers on events that occurred at this large medical surgical hospital. Students are placed in the role of the CEO of PFMC. This hospital cares for the medical and surgical needs of the surrounding community with an active emergency department seeing over 150 patients per day. Students are transported to the scene of an emergency procedure in Surgical Suite 4 at PFMC. There, an operating team finds itself in a dilemma.
