Abstract

Habitat of juvenile Caribbean reef sharks, Carcharhinus perezi (Carcharhinidae), was identified using fishing surveys and capture of immature specimens at two Brazilian insular sites in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean, Fernando de Noronha Archipelago and Atol das Rocas. Standardized sampling at Fernando de Noronha indicated that parturition occurred from February to April and that a wide depth-range (at least 5-30 m) along the insular shelf was used by immature sharks throughout the year. The catch-per-unit effort of C. perezi was significantly higher inside than outside a marine protected area at this location, suggesting that these sharks are more common in parts of the reef least disturbed by human activities. More limited sampling at Atol das Rocas suggested that juvenile C. perezi occurred at similar depths and utilized similar substrate as sharks at Fernando de Noronha. These findings suggest that successful conservation and management of this economically important, protected species will need to include conservation of habitat around insular reef systems. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. This work represents part of the doctoral thesis of RCG. We are grateful to S.H. Gruber and R.S. Rosa for allowing the authors to participate in research cruises to Atol das Rocas in 1999 and 2000, and to M. Brito who provided the research permits to work there. S.H. Gruber and E.K. Pikitch helped inspire and establish this research collaboration. Financial support was provided by the International Society for Reef Studies, Fundação O Boticário/J.D & C.T. McArthur Foundation, and the São Paulo's Research Support Foundation (FAPESP) (to RCG), a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship (to DDC), a Wildlife Conservation Society Fellowship (to DDC and RCG), PADI Foundation and Project AWARE (both to DDC). The Brazilian Environmental Agency (IBAMA) and the Administration of the State District of Fernando de Noronha (ADEFN) provided research permits. We greatly appreciated the vital help of Mr. Orlando José de Souza who provided his boat for shark fishing in 2000, and the many volunteers from 1999 to 2003 who helped in the field.
