Abstract
Background/Objective: Crush injuries are complex injuries, usually resulting from accidents, trauma, or natural disasters, and can cause complications ranging from infections and rhabdomyolysis to compartment syndrome and amputation. Given the multifaceted nature of crush injuries, effective management requires an individualized treatment approach, prompt surgical management, and rehabilitation to optimize patient outcomes. This review aims to provide an overview of crush injuries to the hand, examine long-term management approaches, and demonstrate their application in a case series. Methods: A comprehensive review of current literature on hand crush injury management was conducted through PubMed, and search criteria emphasized functional outcomes, rehabilitation, and complications. Additionally, two cases are presented to highlight the practical application of an evidence-based approach, Results: This review found that timely surgical management, early involvement of occupational therapy, and proactively preventing complications are critical to recovery. Furthermore, we found evidence that emphasizes how the psychosocial impact of injury can affect return-to-work times and must be addressed. Conclusion: These findings emphasize the importance of comprehensive care in facilitating functional recovery and achieving favorable long-term patient outcomes.
