Research output: Contribution to conference › Poster › peer-review

Abstract

Introduction / Rationale: Health literacy is foundational to equitable healthcare access and improved outcomes. Despite its importance, low health literacy affects a significant portion of the global population, resulting in poorer health knowledge, delayed treatment, and increased healthcare costs. An estimated 47% of adults worldwide have limited health literacy, hindering their ability to navigate healthcare systems effectively. Additionally, 36% of adults in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development countries struggle to understand basic healthcare instructions, further emphasizing the need for improved communication strategies in healthcare. Occupational therapy practitioners are uniquely positioned to inspire change by addressing health literacy through client-centered approaches and innovative strategies. This proposal explores how health literacy interventions can empower communities, foster participation, and promote health equity. Objectives: Analyze the influence of health literacy on health outcomes and community participation. Identify and apply evidence-based strategies to improve health literacy in diverse populations. Methods / Approach: A synthesis of evidence from global health literacy initiatives, key methods include biopsychosocial approaches, teach-back methods, analysis of culturally tailored interventions, and application of interactive tools and patient navigator programs to enhance access and engagement. Results / Practice Implications: Improve treatment adherence and chronic disease management Increase client engagement and confidence in navigating healthcare systems Enhance equity in healthcare access Occupational therapists who adopt health literacy strategies are better equipped to reduce health disparities. Conclusion / Contribution to the occupational therapy profession: By championing health literacy, occupational therapists can redefine their advocacy role, build community resilience, and lead efforts toward a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system.
