Microstructure

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter covers several context-specific decision frameworks for transcribing foundational and dependent music layers. The first section covers strategies to capture repetition in grooves and other recurring patterns. The second section then covers the vertical and horizontal scope of chord symbols, and how to set this scope conducively for transcription. Finally, the third section covers several aspects of capturing nuance in phrasing, namely through melismas and articulation shading. The section activities help learners apply con- textual decision-making when transcribing repetition, chord symbols, and note-level contrast. In summary, this chapter offers guidance on transcribing foundational and dependent layers with a readable level of granularity.
