Music Notation

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter covers the scope and limitations of prescriptive music notation in an applied industry context. The first section covers the readability, articulacy, and conceptual clarity of transcribed music notation. The second section then covers two dimensions of notation detail and their integration with each other. Finally, the third section provides a decision framework to determine a context-specific level of transcription detail. The section activities help learners understand the scope of notation detail and practice decision-making on a case-by-case basis. In summary, this chapter provides high-level strategies to create effective sheet music with respect for a work’s production stage, improvisational components, and musicians’ backgrounds.
