Abstract

Once on This Island is a one-act musical by Lynn Ahrens (book/lyrics) and Stephen Flaherty (music), a Caribbean-set retelling of The Little Mermaid that follows a peasant girl, Ti Moune, who falls in love with a wealthy boy and makes a deal with the gods to save him, exploring themes of love, prejudice, and social class. The story is based on Rosa Guy's novel My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl, and features a vibrant, Calypso-infused score, with the original Broadway production premiering in 1990 and a celebrated revival in 2017.
