Abstract
The article focuses on various aspects of preventive dentistry for older patients. Caries is a major cause of tooth loss among older adults. Inability to perform oral self-care adequately can result from poor technique due to concomitant systemic disease. It is stated that gingivitis and periodontitis are the most common periodontal diseases seen in older adults. Inability to perform daily oral self-care due to chronic illness can also increase ones risk of both gingivitis and periodontitis. Diabetes itself has been shown to be associated with increased risk of periodontitis in adults.
