Abstract
This chapter defines qualitative assessment for use with couples and families. It describes observing structure, hierarchy, and interactions; diagnostic interviewing; the genogram; Adult Attachment Inventory; Interventive Interviewing; the Cultural Formulation Interview; Emotional Mapping; Recursive Frame Analysis; Family Life Space Drawing; and Kinetic Family in Action. A strategy for selecting and implementing the assessment is provided. The case material illustrates the use of these assessments. To aid in choosing an appropriate measure for use with a specific couple, a matrix provides capsule summaries of each instrument.
