Stem Cells: A Historical Perspective

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

The history of stem cells and regenerative medicine can be traced as far back as biblical times and ancient Greece. Science’s progress and velocity in identifying and making use of undifferentiated stem cells has been slow and jolted. But, during the 20th century, pioneering work by Maximow, Till, McCulloh, and the like, led to the identification of both the cells themselves and their different locations in the human body. The prospect of stem cell-based therapies is however, laced with technical and ethical challenges. The scientific community remains hopeful that with new sources of stem cells the advances in regenerative medicine can remain fruitful.
