Subclavian steal syndrome

Abstract

Subclavian steal syndrome is a hemodynamic phenomenon that occurs when an atherosclerotic plaque obstructs the subclavian artery proximal to the origin of the vertebral artery. This article presents the pathophysiology, diagnostic testing and evaluation of this hemodynamic phenomenon. In addition, the Optometrist's role in diagnosing and managing subclavian steal syndrome is discussed.
