Abstract

Constraint induced movement therapy (CIMT) is a well-known and widely researched treatment method used in children with varying disabilities and disorders. This systematic review examines the effects of CIMT treatments in children living with cerebral palsy (CP). Thirty-three articles were examined that used CIMT interventions and were found by means of search through major databases such as the Complete Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Proquest, and Ovid. The articles were divided into three categories; home-based, modified, and frequency based on how the CIMT treatments were given. The outcomes of the studies are discussed in the review. Positive effects were seen after the administration of the CIMT treatments, specifically improvements in overall upper extremity function as well as quality movements in the affected extremity to help increase participation in daily activities and occupational performance.

La terapia del movimiento inducido por restricción (TMIR) es un método de intervención conocido y ampliamente investigado que se utiliza en niños con diferentes discapacidades y trastornos. Esta revisión sistemática examina los efectos de la TMIR en niños con diagnóstico de parálisis cerebral. Treinta y tres artículos de investigación que utilizaron TMIR fueron localizados por medio de búsquedas específicas en bases de datos como CINAHL, Proquest y Ovid y analizados minuciosamente. Los artículos fueron divididos en tres categorías: TMIR basada en el hogar, TMIR modificada (TMIR-M) y frecuencia de la intervención de TMIR. Efectos positivos fueron observados luego de la administración de TMIR, específicamente mejorías en la función de la extremidad superior afectada que ayudan a incrementar la participación en actividades diarias y el desempeño ocupacional.
