Abstract

The two folksongs associated with Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh which survive in Irish tradition to the present are: Eibhlín, a rúin [ER] ('Eileen, my love') 'Seachrán Chearbhaill' [SC] (Cearbhall's Wandering'). Both songs occur within certain versions of the folktale of Cearbhall and Eleanor (or Eibhlín), as well as independently. In some examples, the storyteller merely alludes to one or both of the songs, while in others he sings or recites a more-or-less complete version of one of them.
