Validity and internal consistency of the Parent Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices About Sensory Integration Survey

Introduction / Rationale: Families are integral to managing sensory integration problems. However, no known outcome measure exists to investigate parental knowledge, attitudes, and practices for sensory integration problems. Objectives: To detail the procedures used in establishing the validity and testing the reliability of the parent knowledge, attitudes, and practices about sensory integration (parent KAP-SI; Martinez & Moyers, 2023) survey. Methods / Approach: We utilised DeVellis and Thorpe’s (2021) scale development procedure to establish the face and content validity of the Parent KAP-SI (Martinez & Moyers, 2023). The initial survey contained 93 items across four subtests. We administered the survey to two sample populations and analyzed its internal consistency using Cronbach’s alpha after each administration. Results / Practice Implications: After the second testing, we shortened the Parent KAP-SI (Martinez & Moyers, 2023) to a 42-item survey that demonstrated face and content validity in all four subtests and acceptable/good internal consistency in three subtests. Conclusion / Contribution to the occupational therapy profession: Initial findings support using the Knowledge About Sensory Integration, Attitudes and Practices subtests of Parent KAP-SI (Martinez & Moyers, 2023), and revising the sensory integration knowledge subtest.
