    Diabetes produces one of the biggest economic and health burdens in the United States. The total estimated cost of diabetes in 2017 was $327 billion, an increase of 26% when compared to 2012.[ 1 ] Cardiovascular and chronic kidney disease and death are major complications of type 2 diabetes.[ 2 ] Specifically, cardiovascular disease is currently one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in this population and the largest contributor to the direct and indirect costs of diabetes.[ 2 , 3 ] At least 68% of people aged 65 or older with diabetes die from some form of heart disease.[ 3 ] Furthermore, diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.
