Abstract

This strategic research project was designed to help alleviate teacher burnout in a South Texas School District. Using results of a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis, internal and external factors were analyzed to score each item to identify areas that could be addressed to improve teacher stress and anxiety within the organization. Grounded in theory, the problem of heavy workload of teachers throughout the district was identified and addressed. Key factors impacting teacher burnout were heavy workload, student behavior, and large classrooms. Further investigation of each of these factors was done to identify one solution that could be used to help combat teacher burnout in a small rural school district. The solution identified was to implement an exercise program within the school district that would help keep teacher stress and anxiety under control. The recommendations include using exercise and mindfulness that support the implementation of an exercise program. This information could be used to mitigate teacher stress and anxiety that impact teacher burnout, resulting in negatively affecting student achievement. The results of a quantitative strategic plan matrix analysis of the SWOT data were used to compare intervention plans. Based on attractiveness scores of each intervention, a final recommendation was made to use exercise as the primary solution. The plan included allowing all employees to have access to a “free exercise program.” Once approved by the school board, employees would be able to enroll at a local gym and be reimbursed for their annual dues by the school district.
