An Exploratory Case Study to Examine the Integration of Technology to Engage Nursing Students in the Classroom

Abstract

The purpose of this case study was to explore the integration of technology to engage nursing students in the classroom. A focus group developed two questionnaires that were distributed to nursing faculty and nursing students. An in-depth review of literature was conducted to develop an initial list of criteria (expected outcomes) for preferred practices to integrate technology in the nursing classroom setting. The questionnaires were administered to explore the perceptions of nursing faculty and nursing students of preferred practices for integrating technology to engage nursing students in the classroom. The areas of exploration for this case study included: (a) the teaching practices currently used by nursing faculty to engage nursing students in the classroom, (b) the perceptions of nursing faculty regarding practices used to engage nursing students in the classroom, (c) the perceptions of nursing students regarding practices used to engage nursing students in the classroom, (d) the perceptions of nursing faculty regarding the integration of technology to engage nursing students in the classroom, (e) the perceptions of nursing students regarding the integration of technology to engage nursing students in the classroom, and (f) the improvement of nursing student engagement in the classroom with the integration of technology at the college of nursing. The review of literature and questionnaires resulted in construction of criteria of preferred practices incorporated into an action plan. The future expectations for the action plan are that it will be implemented to improve the integration of technology to engage nursing students in the classroom.
