Statement of Purpose Ciguatera is a unique problem that has remained elusive to researchers for the last several decades. Investigations into ciguatera have involved the work of researchers from several different disciplines, including marine scientists, chemists, botanists, ichthyologists, pharmacologists, physicians, and epidemiologists. The purpose of this paper is to provide a review of the ecology of ciguatera production and transmission, the primary modes of action of ciguatera toxins in humans, and the impacts of ciguatera on public health in areas where it is endemic.
