Abstract

Aerobic exercise enables individuals with diabetes to maintain improved glycemic control through increased glucose utilization and decreased insulin requirements. However, recent research suggests that individuals with diabetes have poor compliance rates to their aerobic exercise programs. In contrast, educational programs were found to aid individuals with diabetes in stabilizing blood glucose levels and preventing lower extremity complications. Based on my review of the literature, limited research was available on the effects of education on the compliance rate of individuals with diabetes to an aerobic exercise program. Therefore, the purpose of this study was: (1) to determine the compliance rates of individuals with diabetes to an aerobic exercise program after attending an educational course on diabetes to an aerobic exercise program after attending an educational course on diabetes and (2) to determine if there was a difference in the compliance rates between individuals instructed by a physical therapist and those instructed by an exercise physiologist.
