    Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the process of marine protected area design and implementation. From the initial stages of research, environmental assessment and habitat monitoring, the implementation of government policy is to protect valuable marine ecosystems. This paper also focuses on methods of funding marine protected areas and how they continue to evolve in countries where government funding and support is not always reliable. Moreover, this study explores the notion of a participatory approach to marine protected area design and how this approach establishes a strong community focus on marine resource protection. This focus combined with an effective communicative process among all interested stakeholders can lead to long-term, functional marine protected areas that are fully supported by all members of a local community.
