The concept of attitude is used with great frequency in our society. In the popular press, attitudes are discussed in relation to racial conflicts, differences between young and older people, and political preferences. Such references frequently mention schools as the vehicles in society that have the potential to modify or develop desirable or at least acceptable social attitudes. Personnel in the areas of science and science education are also aware of the importance of attitudes in society and are particularly aware of the importance of society's attitude toward science, scientists, "scientific findings", and the role of science in our society.
