The basic goals listed for science education in the public schools generally include the development, by the student, of understandings of the concepts and processes of science as well as favorable attitudes toward science and things scientific. In addition, hopefully, the student will develop critical thinking abilities characterized by scientific attitudes such as belief in cause and effect relationships, suspended judgement, and freedom from superstition. These goals are important to the development of a scientifically literate citizenry as well as forming the basis for further training of those students who will become workers in the fields of science and technology.
