Abstract

The purpose of this strategic research project was to shed light on the factors that contribute to high teacher turnover rates in urban schools, and the grave repercussions on student achievement. By June 2021, there were 24 instructional vacancies at the elementary grade level, and 22 instructional vacancies in middle and high school at Avant Garde Academy. This was the result of teachers not only opting not to renew their contract but resigning throughout the school year. The Florida Education Associated has noted that the attrition of school staff, most specifically teachers in public and charter schools has been a detriment to the state’s education system. Teachers and other noninstructional staff have been leaving the profession at an alarming rate due to burnout which is caused by several factors including, low compensation, lack of support, an overwhelming workload, overcrowded classrooms, and a lack of preparation, or professional development. Although different solutions were explored, the most viable option is to adequately prepare teachers through on-site trainings and professional developments. The selected strategy to accomplishing this solution is a new teacher academy which would lead through improved pedagogy, teacher retention, and student success. Moreover, the implementation of the action plan will consist of six important stages beginning with the planning and ending with a reflection or evaluation of the training program. It is recommended that Avant Garde Academy partner with universities and community colleges to design the outline of the program, aid in its implementation, and the evaluation of the program and its effectiveness.
