The primary goal of this review are (I) to use existing information to convince a general audience of the serious biological consequences of releasing pollutants into the aquatic environment and (2) to show scientists a conceptual pathway for making connections and the information gaps that, if filled, would make the case for protection of coastal waters from contamination more compelling.
