    Abstract

    A number of efforts are already underway to use recreational divers as the “eyes and ears” of scientists. However, given the actual size of the diving population, these programs are barely scratching the surface. The purpose of this paper will be to detail the background and status of the effort to utilize nonprofessional volunteers, and to provide suggestions for expanding their capabilities.
