Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the use of self-assessment in the physical therapy profession, and to determine if a relationship exists between self-assessment and professional growth. Subjects: A random strategic sample of 300 physical therapists from Broward, Collier, Lee, and Palm Beach counties. Methods: A qualitative methodology using a self-generated survey consisting of 18 closed ended questions regarding self-assessment. Results: Physical therapists use self-assessment for a variety of reasons. The relationship between self-assessment and professional growth was determined to be weak. Conclusions: Self-assessment can be used for professional growth and that these two components were important to the physical therapy profession.
