Monitoring marine pollution in an industrialized world is important for maintaining healthy ecosystems and preventing environmental damage. Teleost histopathology can be used as a biomarker for environmental health and pollution monitoring. This capstone reviews literature pertaining to pollutant-related histopathology in teleost fishes with the aim to understand current approaches to the subject. The capstone examines the effects of a number of common aquatic pollutants on three commonly sampled teleost organs: the liver, kidney, and spleen. It also considers the problems with this approach and offers direction for future research.
